I was in silence... for three and a half years, utterly absorbed in my work, in my meditation, in speaking to my people. And silence is a strange phenomenon... you can be silent and yet not see what is happening around you. Was I oblivious? Perhaps. Was I trusting? Absolutely. And that trust was my mistake... and also my message. You see, the moment you start suspecting, doubting, controlling... you become a politician, not a mystic. I had given her total freedom. That was my teaching - total freedom, total responsibility. She took the freedom and forgot the responsibility. Power is a dangerous drug... more dangerous than any LSD I ever celebrated. I have always said this. And Sheela proved it beautifully, dramatically. She became drunk with power. But let me ask you something... was Jesus oblivious to Judas? Was Buddha oblivious to Devadatta who tried to kill him? The master is always vulnerable. If he is not vulnerable, he is not a master, he is just a politician protecting himself. I take total responsibility for creating the space in which it could happen. And the moment I knew, I spoke. I exposed everything. But yes... I was a fool to trust so totally. And I have no regrets about being that kind of fool.
